India gets its First Tribal President: Smt. Droupadi Murmu.

India has created history by electing a tribal woman as President of India.

Smt. Droupadi Murmu (64yrs), the former Jharkhand Governor and the BJP-led NDA’s Presidential candidate, got more than 64 percent of the votes cast, and At least 20 opposition votes, winning the election by a massive margin, defeating familiar opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha (84 yrs) and winning voters in the electoral college with her charm, simplicity and determined conviction to protect tribal identity.

On her massive victory, PM Narendra Modi tweeted, “India scripts history. At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote part of India has been elected our President.”

Smt. Murmu will be the 15th President of India, taking over from Sh. Ram Nath Kovind, will also be the youngest and India’s first tribal & second woman president to be born after Independence. She will be sworn in on July 25, 2022.

Smt. Murmu comes from Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, which adjoins Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district. She is a Santhali tribal, a group that holds away from Odisha to North Bengal. She began her life as a government official in the agriculture department, becoming councillor and later vice-chairperson of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat, and also vice-president of the BJP’s Scheduled Tribes Morcha in Odisha. In 2000 she became MLA, winning for the second time in 2009. In between, she became minister of state for transport and commerce, and then fisheries and animal husbandry in the state in the coalition between the Biju Janata Dal and the BJP.

Smt. Murmu, The low-profile politician, is a theist & believed to be deeply spiritual and a determined practitioner of the meditation techniques of the “Brahma Kumaris” movement.

In an interview in February 2016 with Doordarshan, Smt. Murmu told briefly about the thundering period of her life when she lost her son in 2009. She said “I was devastated and suffered from depression. I spent sleepless nights after my son’s death. It was when I visited Brahma Kumaris, I realized I had to move on and live for my two sons and daughter.”

Smt. Murmu’s name came up for discussion as the President of India even in 2017 but at that time, the government chose Sh. Ramnath Kovind, the outgoing president.
This time, she was selected by the parliamentary board of the BJP after shortlisting 20 candidates.

Later on, PM Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda visited & congratulated Smt. Murmu at her residence.

“Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has been an outstanding MLA and Minister. She had an excellent tenure as Jharkhand governor. I am certain she will be an outstanding President who will lead from the front and strengthen India’s development journey,” PM Modi said on Twitter, after Smt. Murmu’s victory.
