Prime Minister Modi makes an appeal to the states to clear the electricity dues as soon as possible, saying that Many states owe more than 1 Lakh crore rs. to the electricity firms.

PM Modi on Saturday discussed the losses in the electricity sector and insisted that the losses due to the outstanding in the developed nations are in Single-digit, while in India, the loss figure is in Double Digits. He further commented, “This means that we have a lot of wastage of electricity and therefore we have to generate more electricity than we need to meet the demand,”

PM Modi further said that the state governments must address outstanding dues to distribution companies, which often stretch over several months, threatening the financial position of power-generating companies.

He was speaking at the event marking the culmination of ‘Ujjwal Bharat Ujjwal Bhavishya – Power @2047’.

According to the data reports of the Ministry of Power, More than $17 billion in outstanding amounts are dues to the power distribution companies.

He insisted that In many states, the electricity dues to the firms are more than 1 lakh crore rupees.

He said. “The country will be surprised to know that different states have outstanding dues of more than ₹1 lakh crore. They have to give this money to power generation firms. Power distribution companies have more than ₹60 thousand crores to many government departments, local bodies also, in dues.”

Apart from urging the states to clear the outstanding at the earliest, He also asked the states to consider the reasons sincerely that even when the countrymen pay their electricity bills honestly, why do some states have arrears again and again?
